Evelyn C. Grieve is the co-founder of Friends. Evelyn and Karen Diviney, the current Shelter director, founded the Friends in Evelyn and her husband Bill are the lucky foster failures of Eddie, the Friends mascot.

Eddie is an year old, full-of-life Cairn terrier. Evelyn and Bill have also rescued a special-needs Airedale terrier. Other pets have included a Dandie Dinmont terrier and another Airedale terrier. Evelyn grew up with cats, dogs, ducks, rabbits, turtles and hamsters. In addition to gardening, Evelyn, Bill and Eddie love the beach.

Rita Altman is a retired preschool and primary special education teacher. She touched the lives of children in California and Virginia public school systems. While living in Irvine, Calif. SinceRita has volunteered at the Fairfax County Animal Shelter with the foster program and as a dog walker.

She joined the Friends Board in Jill Westeyn is a public affairs specialist and social media manager with the United States Mint, and was formerly a program manager with the Air Force Association. She is a retired Air Force veteran. Jill has more than 20 years of public affairs and events management experience.

Jill joined Friends in as a much-needed volunteer. The work she did for Friends inspired her to become a dog kennel volunteer at the Shelter. In addition to caring for the dogs, Jill works as part of a training team, helping to make dogs more adoptable.

Jill met her husband Lindsey while they were both serving on active duty in Washington, D. Jill and Lindsey live in Herndon with their two beagle mixes, Sully and Zeke. Nancy is a commercial lender with TD Bank. Nancy has more than 20 years of retail and commercial banking experience. Nancy and her husband Mark have lived in the Chantilly community for more than 30 years.

They have four children and have collectively rescued 10 dogs throughout the years. Michael R.Our volunteers are the real heroes in helping all the animals in our care. Every day, they enrich the lives of cats, dogs, birds, horses, and small mammals waiting for their forever homes. Our animals and staff welcome every volunteer, whether walking dogs, playing with cats, or just sitting quietly with a new rescue. Volunteers also support us at events throughout the community, sort through donations to the Ani-Meals Pet Pantry, photograph the animals, and provide expertise for many of our projects.

Ways To Donate

You can enter hours on any mobile device. Log on here. Please take a look at the opportunities below to find the kind of work that most interests you. It will take a few days for us to review your application and our volunteer coordinator will contact you as soon as possible. Everyone must complete the New Volunteer Orientation. Volunteers must be at least 18 years old.

For more information on activities for offsite volunteering, click here. We need people to help customers, accept donations, stock the store, and keep everything neat and attractive. Your activities may include data entry, copying and filing, addressing and stuffing envelopes, and answering the phone.

Sometimes, we have special tasks such as flyer preparation or computer projects that you can do off-site. We also need a handyman to make occasional small repairs or improvements at the Fairfax office, farm, and thrift stores. Cat Socializers: Help cats get adopted faster by keeping them clean and healthy. Cat Foster Opportunities: Some of our cats need a little time before moving on to their forever homes.

Although foster cats are considered highly adoptable, they might be too young or need extra care for a while. Cat Adoption Visits Pre- or Post-Adoption : We want to make sure our animals go to safe homes and adjust well to their new families. As a volunteer, you may conduct home checks prior to adoption or follow-up shortly afterward to ensure a smooth transition to the new home. Animal Transporter: If you have reliable transportation and proof of insurance, consider helping us take animals to and from vet appointments and adoption events.

You may also help move incoming animals from other shelters and rescue organizations. Small Mammal Socializers: Help small animals like rabbits and guinea pigs get adopted faster by keeping them clean and healthy. Small Mammal Foster Opportunities: Some of our small animals need a little time before moving on to their forever homes. Although these fosters are considered highly adoptable, they might be too young or need extra care for a while.
