Audi a4 2.0 tdi 2008 review

I bought it as a CPO car in with 36k miles. The car is absolutely sublime to drive in every way, even with the firm suspension. The first year I owned it, I put over 25k miles commuting mi each way for work, across a mountain range. The traction control and AWD have literally saved my life twice hitting black ice on a bend in the highway.

Then one day, accelerating onto the interstate, the engine shut down leaving me just enough momentum to coast over to the shoulder on a massive bridge, no less. After having it inspected and diagnosed at the dealer, it turns out a high pressure fuel pump exploded, literally.

It blew metal shrapnel into the engine destroying the block and fuel system. A piece s of shrapnel severed the intake cam chain, seizing the cam and destroying most of the remainder of the engine. At this point, I haven't decide if I'm going to keep the car after all this or just dump it. If you want a car that is nearly perfect to drive, this is the one. I purchased this car used with about 1 year left on the original warranty.

I had a couple minor problems, but Audi's service is fantastic. However, after the warranty ended I began experiencing problems every months. These included spark plugs going bad, problems with water getting into the intake, the fuel pump going bad, problems with the brake light switch, and more.

These also included my car being stuck in the shop for multiple days very long costly repairs. Overall, the car is fun to drive, but be prepared for a lot of costly repairs down the road. Purchased this car in after my A3 2. The A4 had 28K miles from a warm-weather state and was a one-owner car from a vacation home - well cared for with full service records based on time, not mileage.

I would have preferred Quattro, but the price and mileage were hard to beat. I should have listened to my instincts. Vastly different character than the A The CVT transmission is horrendous - slow to respond in standard mode, jerky engagement from dead stop Brakes on the A4 are less direct, more difficult to modulate and with longer pedal travel than the A3 - might be fixed with stainless steel brake lines.Use the tools below to refine your search by only displaying reviews with a certain number of star ratings or to only show reviews from a certain time period.

An excellent car - very comfortable - powerful. The only thing that I am worried about is the whine in the engine at speeds under 80 - very noticeable but the audi dealer says it is normal for this diesel turbo model.

The thirth generation A4 to be exact, the car was built between and The internal code for this generation is B7. We will talk a bit about the car, the engines and on to the most important question, is this car reliable. In Audi announced a new model A4, in fact the Audi A4 B7 was until that point still based on the old chassis from the B6.

The single frame grill that was the family face from Audi at the time was also introduced in this generation. Furthermore it offered new headlight units, new backlight units. This allowed for the 2. The basis engines remained the same, but the 1. There was a new engine available as well, the 3. The 1,9 being more reliable then the newer 2. With the introduction of the B7, Audi introduced a brand new engine, the 3.

The interior can be worn out quite fast for people that use the car heavily. A worn out interior can also be related to high mileage cars, if the seats are worn out and the mileage does not match, walk away.

Especially when you use that power frequently. When you are in the market for an A4 convertible it is a wise decision to check if the roof is waterproof. The roofs of convertibles are strong but also very pricy to replace. Also the airconditioning is a weak part that might break easy, especially in the early production models. We tested the two litre diesel but also in the new range is the 1.

Audi have made a big effort to make the new A4 appear more athletic, with taut, dynamic outlines and short front body overhangs. The longer bonnet and wheelbase help to give it more of a presence on the road.

A strongly tapered rear, 16 inch alloy wheels and bold wheel arches emphasise the vehicles muscular, sporty appearance. Seventeen and eighteen inch wheels can be fitted. Wrap around xenon headlights contain 14 white light-emitting diodes for daytime driving.

Exterior mirrors are electronically adjustable and house LED indicators. Remote central locking, a security engine immobiliser and front and rear parking sensors are standard across the range. A rear view camera is optional. The A4 is available in 15 body colours, more than any of its competitors.

The instrument cluster is easy to read and switches on the dash have a precision feel. There is an optional extra interior lighting package to add more sparkle to the cabin. The concert sound system is mp3 compatible and pumps out of 10 speakers including a subwoofer.

While it is very competent and would make a fantastic taxi, it lacks the refinement and driver experience you expect from an Audi. Both the braking and acceleration grab and jerk, and while the turbo is responsible for some of this it doesn't sit well with the profile of this car as transport for people who will pay a bit extra for German engineering over domestic.

It cruises well on the freeway and acceleration is good from any speed so long as you are not expecting it to be applied in a linear fashion. At speed in the test car there was quite strong wind noise emanating from the rear door sills, again not expected from an Audi. All controls are easily accessible and you don't need to read a manual to know what's what. Whatever useability expert came up with these as the default did not interview me.

Please go back to light shades of blue and green so I don't have to keep putting my glasses on just to read the dash. Audi seats are incredibly uncomfortable, with a convex curvature at the lower lumbar that pushes your spine all the wrong ways.

Another seat gripe for families with young kids is that the rear seats sit very low, and the belt line is quite high, which means the kids struggle to see out the window. It is amazing to think that the A4 2.Solid build quality throughout. Huge range of engines and specifications. Available with quattro four-wheel drive. Frugal diesels. Well designed and user-friendly boot. Poor ride quality with earlier S line models. Dashboard design a little fussy. It does indeed look the part too, not quite the generic oblong block that some estate cars end up being.

That said, with Audi retaining longitudinal front-wheel drive as the standard layout for the A4 four-wheel drive quattro is available toothe A4 Avant is inherently less engaging than its rear-wheel drive alternatives — namely the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Estate and BMW 3 Series Touring. It does, with a predictable turn-in and - if you specify quattro - a uniquely thrilling blend of grip and composure, especially in wet weather.

The problem is that prior towhen Audi launched the A6 and showed everyone that it was able to make a car ride comfortably, the company generally conflated 'sporty handling' with firm suspension. One thing that has never been lacking with this A4 Avant, though, is choice.

Every base is covered, from the frugal PS four-cylinder 2.

And finally the brain scrambling RS4, with its PS 4. Over its seven-year lifespan Audi constantly tried to keep the car fresh with trim, engine and specification updates, though there have been some mainstays throughout.

Base model SE cars feature continuously, as do sporty S line versions, while post Black Edition models are catnip to a certain demographic, coming with huge-looking inch alloy wheels and gloss black trim inside and out.

Audi had its very own messiah of sorts with the A4. Bad press regarding unintended acceleration based on reports that were later shown to be unfounded tarnished the manufacturer's image in the late '80s and early '90s, sending sales into an unholy tailspin. Launched in the mid-'90s, the Audi A4 -- buoyed by crisp handling, superb road manners and elegant visage -- proved compelling enough to reinvigorate the brand.

Another potential negative is the rear seat, which isn't as roomy as the accommodations in some rivals. Hard-core enthusiasts might also criticize the A4's handling, which is softer and less responsive than the premier sport sedans in this price range.
